What is Carrageenan and do you use it?
We don’t use carrageenan. However, it is in two products that we use here. There is a minimal amount of food grade carrageenan in the vitamin enriching powder. Daiya, non-dairy “cheeses” have removed carrageenan form their formultaion in 2017/2018.
Carrageenan is also referred to as “Irish moss” and is a natural carbohydrate that is extracted from seaweed. The form that is used is “food-grade” or “un-degraded” carrageenan; which forms a strong gel that contributes to the desired texture of products.
There has been some controversy over carrageenan and it is really about degraded carrageenan, which is not used in food. The need for vitamin enriching for those with Celiac Disease and food allergies far outweighs the minimal possible presence of food grade carrageenan.
Our organic creamer (half and half) does not contain carrageenan!
